Between the cold, the wind, the humidity, and the heating, winter is harsh on our skin.
It feels tight, reddens, becomes dry, uncomfortable, and sometimes even damaged.
Yet, it’s entirely possible to protect it effectively with a suitable skincare routine.
Step 1: Cleanse gently, morning and evening
It is often forgotten, but cleansing is the most fundamental step in any skincare routine — even (and especially) in winter.
In the morning, it helps eliminate excess sebum and toxins released overnight. In the evening, it removes impurities, makeup, pollution, and fine particles accumulated throughout the day.
In winter, the priority is to preserve the skin barrier . Therefore, avoid harsh foaming cleansers or those containing alcohol. Opt instead for:
- A cleansing oil ,
- A gentle cleansing milk ,
- Or a perfume-free micellar water , suitable for sensitive skin.
Apply gently, without rubbing, and rinse with lukewarm water (definitely not hot, so as not to further weaken the skin).
Step 2: Apply your skincare products to slightly damp skin
Right after cleansing, your skin is still slightly damp. This is the perfect time to apply your skincare products. Why? Because slightly damp skin:
- It retains water better.
- Promotes the penetration of moisturizing and nourishing active ingredients,
- And reduces hydration loss.

You can spray on a mist or floral water, then massage in your cream or serum directly afterwards, without waiting for the skin to dry.
It’s a small, simple gesture, but remarkably effective in preventing winter dehydration .
Step 3: Opt for a nourishing and protective treatment
In winter, your skin needs lipids as much as water. It’s no longer enough to hydrate it; you also need to deeply nourish it to restore its hydrolipidic film.
Opt for a rich cream containing protective and lipid-replenishing active ingredients:
- Vegetable oils (argan, avocado, sweet almond…),
- Shea butter,
- Ceramides,
- Hyaluronic acid (to retain water).
This type of treatment acts like a shield, reducing water loss and protecting your skin from cold, wind, and irritations related to temperature variations.
Well-nourished skin is stronger, more supple, and more radiant skin.
Step 4: Don’t forget the sensitive areas
Certain parts of the face and body are more exposed than others: the lips, hands, and the area around the eyes. They deserve special attention.
- For your lips , apply a nourishing balm several times a day. Avoid moistening them with your tongue: this worsens chapping.
- For your hands , use a specific cream after each wash. Keep a small amount in your bag for very cold days.
- For the eye area , opt for a specific moisturizing treatment, as the skin there is thinner and more vulnerable.
These are often the areas that betray a lack of care in winter: anticipate and protect them from the first signs of cold.
Step 5: Adapt your lifestyle to the season
Cosmetic treatments are essential, but they aren’t enough if your lifestyle isn’t on point. To keep your skin glowing in winter, here are a few simple habits to incorporate into your daily routine:

- Drink enough water : the sensation of thirst decreases in winter, but the needs remain the same.
- Take lukewarm showers, not scalding hot : water that is too hot dries out the skin.
- Use a humidifier if the indoor air is too dry.
- Get enough sleep to promote cell regeneration.
- Favor a diet rich in good fats (omega-3, olive oil, oily fish…) and antioxidants (fruits, vegetables, seeds).
Taking care of your skin is also taking care of yourself, from the inside out.
Adopting a winter skincare routine isn’t about making life complicated. On the contrary, it’s about getting back to basics, with simple, well-chosen steps and daily attention.
Remember these key points:
- Clean gently,
- Apply the skincare products to damp skin.
- Choose rich and nourishing formulas,
- Target sensitive areas,
- And take care of your lifestyle.
